Title: Road Safety and Convergent IoT/ITS - From Safety Systems to Blockchain
Abstract
Blockchains are set to play a critical role in IoT/ITS systems. Our interest in this talk is its application in making roads safer. In general, road safety continues to be a great concern despite various advances and initiatives. Sweden introduced the Safe System (SS) approach in 1996 as part of a plan to eliminate road fatalities and injuries. Since then, SS has been internationally adopted by the World Health Organization. In this talk, we describe how the SS approach offers a holistic structuring of various innovative solutions in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). We also introduce a necessary extension to the SS approach considering emerging technologies such as connected and computing vehicles and vehicle autonomy. Finally, in facilitating this extension, we illustrate a novel application of blockchain that ensures both road safety, as well as the safety of its connected elements.

Abd-Elhamid M. Taha is an Assistant Professor at Alfaisal University, KSA and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Queen’s University, Canada. His B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering were earned at Kuwait University in 1999 and 2002, and his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering was earned Queen’s University, Canada in 2007. His current interests include modeling in networked cyber-physical systems and cognition in computer networks.
