W03: 5G-Trials - From 5G Experiments to Business Validation

Following the 5G development roadmap, 5G has successfully completed the design and development phase and has now moved to the trial phase. In Europe, three large testbed projects under H2020 5G PPP programme have started on 1 July 2018. With more than 50 million Euro funding in total, these projects will build the 5G testbed facilities for coming 5G trials in Europe. In China, two large-scale 5G trial projects led by China Mobile and China Unicom will start after July 2018. Similar 5G trial activities are in Japan, South Korea, the Americans, and other regions. In addition to public funded 5G trial programmes, major telecom operators, vendors and main players from vertical sectors have planned, or even started, their own 5G trials. In the next two years, 5G trials will become the main driver for 5G research and development.

This workshop aims at providing a snapshot of the status and progress of 5G trials, and will discuss the first results and the new insights and findings from the range of ongoing 5G trials. The workshop will cover key topics related to 5G trials, including, but not limited to, the

  • evaluation of 5G spectrum,
  • evaluation of the performance of 5G NR implementations,
  • system architecture, e.g. separation of DU/CU, and UP/CP,
  • verification and performance test of 5G key enabling technologies, e.g., massive MIMO, multi-connectivity, network slicing.
  • 5G network planning, and
  • network deployment optimization.

5G will provide the native support for enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine type communications and ultra-reliable low latency communications. This allows many vertical sectors to utilize 5G platforms to e.g. extend their business or improve efficiency of operations. One important aim of 5G trials is to test vertical services and to validate new business models that the new 5G ecosystem will facilitate. These topics will be covered by the workshop.

All currently known 5G trials are strongly industry-driven activities to which however also academia contributes. Therefore, the workshop will be a mixed industry and academic event. The workshop will invite keynote speakers from major telecom operators and vendors. To further discuss the key topics in trials, the workshop will organize a panel with high-profile panellist from industry and the research community. The workshop’s technical sessions will include high quality papers to report key findings of the ongoing 5G trials. 

The workshop accepts not only test results from trials, but also theoretical results based on realistic deployment schemes and new 5G business models. The targeted topics of the workshop include, but are not limited to:
